Side Kick Drill

How To Do It

Body Position:

  • One arm extended in front of you, the other relaxed at your side
  • Belly button pointed towards the side wall of the pool
  • Legs extended out behind you
  • Tuck your cheek into the armpit of your extended arm with your eyes looking down
  • Make your body as long as you can

The Movement:

  • Kick across the pool maintaining your side position
  • Keep your head still and your eyes looking straight down
  • If you need to breathe, turn your head to the side keeping one ear and one eye in the water
  • Take a quick breath, then return your head to the starting position
  • Extend and reach forward with your arm as you breathe

Things To Focus On:

  • Float as high as you can in the water
  • Keep your head, hips and heels in one straight line
  • Keep your kicks small and fast enough to maintain your balance position
  • Keep your head still and the arm at your side relaxed against your body
  • Stretch, reach and extend in the direction you are swimming

Unless you know why you’re doing them.

The right drills, used in the right way, can do wonders for your stroke. But drills aren’t a magic pill. Understanding what you’re trying to change, and how each drill fits into your stroke, is what makes them useful.
